Staging, the Way We Do It

For us, staging isn’t simply an appointment in the calendar.

It’s more like a small-scale moving operation — with guaranteed muscle ache the next day.

Before one photo shoot, I stopped at a flower shop. Both shoulders were loaded with overstuffed IKEA bags, I had a studio light in one hand and a glass vase in the other. All I needed was the right bouquet of flowers.

The florist was on the phone. She looked at me, then gestured firmly:

“Go away!”

I stared at her, completely confused.

Then, even more irritably:

“I’m not buying anything!!!”

So there I stood with two IKEA bags, a studio light and a vase, thinking that surely my outfit made it fairly obvious that I wasn’t exactly a door-to-door salesperson — or one of those perfume sellers jumping out of a Mercedes. For a few seconds, I had absolutely no idea what she was talking about.

Then it clicked.

She thought I was trying to sell her the vase.

I started laughing. Then she did too. We stood there laughing for several minutes while she apologised profusely.

And ever since, I’ve been wondering:

Maybe it’s time to rethink the outfit I had always considered so perfectly me…

We don’t just list properties — we dress them for sale. Even if, in the process, someone mistakes us for the salespeople selling the props!
