One cold winter morning, my phone rang. On the other end was an agitated client informing me that he was going to report us to the police.
“He knows exactly what we are doing in the empty house he entrusted us to sell.”
Apparently, the neighbour had seen my colleagues going into the property in the evenings as well.
“With buyers?” I asked, surprised.
After all, that was their job.
- “According to him, not exactly…”
I tried to picture my elegantly dressed female colleagues, instead of working, getting up to no good on the floor of an unheated, dilapidated house that was being marketed essentially at land value and was destined for demolition — albeit in an excellent location.
I couldn’t quite imagine it. The client, however, was deadly serious.
So serious, in fact, that it became an official matter.
In the end, I had to make a formal statement confirming that neither I nor my colleagues had used the property for “purposes not specifically related to the sale.”
The police officer taking the statement was struggling not to laugh.
I was less amused.
In the end, the client apologised for initially believing the neighbour.
And we sold the property after all.
